Frequently asked questions

All questions on the resources page

How it works

How does an OCTOEN composting machine work?

You load organic waste and press one button. The machine heats the chamber to 45-75 °C (113-167 °F) and turns the waste with mixing arms while fans move clean air through it. Exhaust air passes through the odor filter before it leaves the machine. ECO-130 and larger models also weigh the waste with four load cells and dose liquid enzyme automatically.

How long does a cycle take?

One composting cycle takes 12-24 hours. Capacities are given per day, so you load the machine every day.

How much does the waste volume go down?

Up to 90% for wet food waste, and 60-70% for waste that is high in carbohydrates, fiber or acid. Adding dry matter lowers the reduction but improves the compost quality.

What comes out of the machine?

Fresh compost, used as a soil amendment.

Is it a food waste dehydrator?

No. ECO-130 and larger models run an enzyme-assisted biological process at 45-75 °C (113-167 °F). A dehydrator dries the waste; our machines compost it.

Choosing a model

Which model fits our site?

Choose by the amount of organic waste you produce per day: ECO-30 (30 kg, 66 lb), ECO-130 (130 kg, 287 lb), ECO-300 (300 kg, 661 lb), ECO-500 (500 kg, 1,102 lb), ECO-1000 (1,000 kg, 2,205 lb), ECO-2500 (2,500 kg, 5,512 lb) and ECO-5000 (5,000 kg, 11,023 lb a day). The system finder suggests a model from your numbers.

Is there a unit for home kitchens?

Yes, the ECO-05 KSN countertop unit. It dries, grinds, cools and sterilizes with UV-C: about 90% of the waste is broken down and the rest can be used as a soil amendment. It is sold online (Amazon USA and Türkiye).

What about bones, shells and fibrous waste?

Run them through the ECO-100 Shredder first. It reduces bones, shells and fibrous waste to a compost-ready size, shreds up to 300 kg (661 lb) an hour and works with every ECO model. The ECO-30 to ECO-1000 can also be ordered with an integrated shredder.

How much does a machine cost?

The price depends on the model, the options and your site, so we send a written quote. Request one with the quote form.

Installation and site

What does the site need?

A grounded power supply with residual-current protection, a ventilated or air-circulated area and a flat floor that can carry the machine. Placing the machine with a forklift or crane is the buyer's responsibility.

Does it need a water or drain connection?

No. The machine needs no water connection and no wastewater connection; add a little water only if the compost gets too dry. It makes compost, not wastewater, so it can go into service right away.

Can it stand indoors or outdoors?

Both. The built-in odor filtration allows indoor or outdoor installation.

What power supply does it need?

The ECO-30 and ECO-130 run on single-phase power; in the US that is 208-240 V, 60 Hz. Larger models need three-phase industrial power, typically 480 V or 208 V, 60 Hz in the US. Site voltage and frequency are confirmed per project, and the machine is configured accordingly.

How much space do the machines take?

From 720 × 420 × 730 mm (28 × 17 × 29 in) for the ECO-30 to 5,800 × 1,900 × 2,685 mm (228 × 75 × 106 in) for the ECO-5000 compost unit. Every product page lists the exact dimensions and weights.

Operation and care

Do we need a trained operator?

No dedicated operator is needed. The machines run on PLC control with one-button operation.

Do we need enzyme and sawdust all the time?

No. The enzyme pump sprays enzyme for 2 to 3 seconds, only at the first start and after the machine has been fully emptied; after that the compost left inside acts as a starter. Sawdust is needed only as a base at the first start and to speed up very oily or wet batches. Enzyme and sawdust are supplied separately.

How do we care for the odor filter?

There is no costly mandatory filter change. When odor appears, or about every 6 months, slide out the filter cassette, rinse it with water and refill only the activated carbon.

Does it smell or make noise?

Built-in odor filtration (activated carbon and UVC) keeps operation odorless. Noise levels: under 45 dB for the ECO-30, ECO-130 and ECO-1000, under 50 dB for the ECO-2500, under 60 dB for the ECO-300 and ECO-500, and under 65 dB for the ECO-5000.

Can we monitor the machine remotely?

Yes. ECO-130 and larger models connect to the internet for remote monitoring, intervention and control. They also come with OCTOEN Carbon Tracker software, an energy analyzer and four load cells, so you can see the waste that went in, the energy used and the net weight at the end.

What goes in

What can we put in the machine?

Food and other organic waste, landscaping material, compostable tableware and brown cardboard. When the waste is very oily or wet, the machine applies the right recipe automatically.

What should stay out?

The machine is built for organic waste. Keep out anything that is not organic, such as packaging, metal, glass and plastics, and ask us first if you are not sure. Bones, shells and fibrous waste go through a shredder first.

Warranty, service and delivery

What warranty do the machines have?

A 12-month limited warranty. The exact terms are set in your written quote.

Who installs the machine and trains our team?

We plan installation, commissioning and user training with you; in the US these services are quoted separately. For the ECO-30, installation and training are done remotely.

Where do you have service?

OCTOEN has direct operations in the US and Türkiye, and assembly, installation and service facilities in Chicago, Peru and Chile.

How long does delivery take?

Lead times are confirmed per project in your quote. The ECO-5000 line has a production lead time of 90 days. Fast door-to-door shipping with FedEx or DHL is available for the ECO-30 to ECO-500 KSN.

Are the machines certified?

CE certified; manufactured with CSA and UL standards in mind. OCTOEN's management systems are certified to ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001 and ISO 10002, and its welding to ISO 3834-2.
