Food waste composters for islands, ships and offshore sites
Where every load of waste leaves by boat, a food waste composter for islands and ships handles kitchen waste where it is produced. OCTOEN systems run at island resorts, on cruise ships and on naval vessels, with compact models from 30 kg (66 lb) to 300 kg (661 lb) a day.

The challenge
What island and marine teams deal with
- Hauling by boatOn an island, food waste leaves by boat or barge, and every trip costs money. On board, it has to be stored until the next port.
- Tight galleys, closed spacesGalleys and island kitchens have little floor space, and food waste kept in a closed space soon brings odor.
- Salt air, scarce fresh waterHumid, salty air is hard on equipment, and fresh water on a vessel or a small island is too valuable to spend on waste handling.
How OCTOEN fits
How on-site composting fits islands and vessels
Kitchen staff load food waste after each service and press one button, and a 12-24 hour composting cycle turns it into fresh compost. The machine needs power and a ventilated space, not a water line or a drain, and built-in odor filtration with activated carbon and UVC keeps the galley free of odor. On Pine Cay in Turks and Caicos, where hauling waste is costly, an ECO-30 KSN turns kitchen scraps into compost on site. On land, the fresh compost can go on resort gardens and landscaping as an organic fertilizer; on board, far less material waits for port.
- ECO-30 KSN: 720 × 420 × 730 mm (28 × 17 × 29 in), single-phase power, under 45 dB
- ECO-130 KSN: 130 kg (287 lb) a day in a 300 L (79 gal) bin, with load cells and OCTOEN Carbon Tracker
- 100% stainless steel body, dip passivated against corrosion
- Up to 90% less volume for wet food waste, so much less material is stored or shipped
- Bones and shells go through the ECO-100 Shredder first

Sizing
Sizing for a resort or a vessel
Count the meals served in a day, for guests and crew together. A rule of thumb is about 0.26 kg (0.57 lb) of food waste per meal. Size for your busiest regular day, such as a full house in high season, and check doors, hatches and the route to the machine's place before you order. Our engineers confirm the final size and the power supply for each site or vessel.
A resort or vessel serving 450 meals a day produces about 117 kg (258 lb) of food waste a day, which fits the ECO-130 KSN.

Rules for food waste on board and in port depend on the vessel, its route and the port, so your compliance team sets those requirements. What on-site composting adds is a simple daily routine for zero-waste goals: less food waste leaves the island or waits for port, and the compost stays useful on land. From the ECO-130 KSN up, four load cells, an energy analyzer and OCTOEN Carbon Tracker record each load with the date and time, which gives sustainability reports and guest communication measured numbers instead of estimates.

Do OCTOEN systems run on ships?
Yes. OCTOEN systems run on cruise ships and naval vessels, and at island resorts such as Pine Cay in Turks and Caicos.
What power does the machine need on board?
The ECO-30 KSN and ECO-130 KSN run on single-phase power at 50 or 60 Hz; the ECO-300 KSN needs three-phase power. We confirm voltage and frequency for each vessel or site, and the machine is configured accordingly.
Does it need fresh water or a drain?
No. The machine needs no water or wastewater connection; add a little water only if the compost gets too dry. It makes compost, not wastewater.
How much space does it take?
A food waste composter for islands and ships has to fit tight rooms. The ECO-30 KSN measures 720 × 420 × 730 mm (28 × 17 × 29 in), the ECO-130 KSN 1,350 × 720.5 × 840 mm (53 × 28 × 33 in) and the ECO-300 KSN 2,000 × 965 × 1,425 mm (79 × 38 × 56 in).
How are installation and service handled far from the mainland?
The ECO-30 KSN is installed and its users are trained remotely. For larger models, we plan installation, commissioning and training with you; in the US these are quoted, and the limited warranty runs 12 months from acceptance or 14 months from shipment. The exact terms are set in your written quote.
