Composting at the store, the warehouse and the market
Donate what is still edible; the composter takes the rest. In a supermarket, an ECO-130 KSN in the back room handles up to 130 kg (287 lb) a day: Macrocenter runs 2 × ECO-130 KSN to process organic waste inside its stores. At Migros distribution centers, ECO-1000 KSN lines process large volumes of organic waste at the source, so less waste has to be transported. At open-air markets, Üsküdar Municipality has composted the waste of Bulgurlu street market, held on Thursdays, with an ECO-1000 KSN since September 2025, in public view. The enzyme-assisted process at 45-75 °C (113-167 °F) makes fresh compost, not dried waste.

How to size a system for a store or market
Size a supermarket food waste composter by what you discard, not by floor area. Weigh unsold produce, bakery and deli waste for two typical weeks, take the daily average and allow for peak days. In a chain, size each store on its own numbers and plan a larger machine for central facilities. For a market, weigh the waste of one market day and tell us how many days a week the market runs; we work out the size with you.
A supermarket that discards about 100 kg (220 lb) of produce, bakery and deli waste a day fits the ECO-130 KSN. A distribution center with 800 kg (1,764 lb) a day fits the ECO-1000 KSN.

Grocery organics rules in the US
There is no federal composting mandate, but several states and cities name food stores directly. In Washington, DC, food stores of 10,000 sq ft or more have had to donate excess edible food and separate back-of-house food waste since 2023, grocery chains since 2024, and an on-site in-vessel or DPW-approved system is allowed. In New York City, food stores above set size thresholds must separate organic waste, and an in-vessel system on site is one way to comply. Check the official sources on our regulations page.

Can expired packaged food go in?
Only after the packaging comes off. The machine takes food and organic waste, brown cardboard and compostable tableware; plastic, glass, metal and other packaging stay out.
Which model fits one supermarket?
If the store discards up to 130 kg (287 lb) a day, the ECO-130 KSN fits and runs on single-phase power. Up to 500 kg (1,102 lb), look at the ECO-500 KSN; up to 1,000 kg (2,205 lb), the ECO-1000 KSN.
Can a city or market operator compost market waste on site?
Yes. Üsküdar Municipality processes the waste of Bulgurlu street market in Istanbul with OCTOEN. The project won the KentFest 2025 award for the best urban carbon reduction project by a municipality, given by the KENTSEV foundation.
Does it need water, a drain or a separate room?
No. A ventilated area, a flat, load-bearing floor and a grounded power supply are enough. Built-in activated carbon and UVC filtration keeps operation odorless, indoors or outdoors.
Who installs it in the US?
OCTOEN LLC serves US customers from its assembly, installation and service facility in Chicago. Installation, commissioning and training are quoted with the machine, and the limited warranty runs 12 months from acceptance or 14 months from shipment. Contact us for a quote.
