Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality Turns Organic Waste into Compost and Animal Food with OCTOEN Machines

Several OCTOEN machines run at the food and compost production center set up by Şanlıurfa Metropolitan Municipality's Climate Change and Zero Waste Department in Türkiye. Kitchen waste and organic waste collected from wholesale and street markets are processed there.
Two outputs: compost and animal food
According to the municipality, the center produces about 4 t of cat and dog food and 1 t of compost a month, with a team of 5 staff and a food engineer. Fruit and vegetable waste becomes compost, which is used in the municipal hobby garden for seniors, people with disabilities and veterans, and on green areas. Food made from leftover meals goes to the municipality's animal shelters and animal hospitals.
A classroom for zero waste
The center also serves environmental education. In April 2025, children from Nene Hatun Kindergarten in Karaköprü visited and saw how kitchen and market waste becomes animal food and compost.
A model for municipalities
The project shows that organic waste does not have to go to landfill: in one city it meets two needs, compost for the soil and food for street animals, and frees municipal budget for other services.
