One Year of Zero Waste Market: Üsküdar Returns Market Waste to the Soil with OCTOEN Machines

Üsküdar Municipality in Istanbul launched its "Zero Waste Üsküdar, Zero Waste Market" project in September 2025 with a pilot at Bulgurlu street market. At the market, held on Thursdays, fruit and vegetable waste is sorted at the stalls and taken to OCTOEN composting machines the same day.

Lab-tested compost for residents

After testing in accredited laboratories, the compost is given to residents free of charge, and some of it goes to the district's parks and community gardens. The municipality plans to extend the project to other markets in the district.

First-year results

At the Üsküdar Environment Festival in June 2026, the mayor said the project had turned about 100 t of organic waste into compost and aims to avoid about 97 t of CO2 equivalent a year. The project also won the KentFest 2025 award for the best urban carbon reduction project by a municipality.
