Üsküdar Wins KentFest 2025 Award for 'Best Urban Carbon Reduction Project by a Municipality' with OCTOEN Composters

Üsküdar Municipality in Istanbul won the KentFest 2025 Municipal Award for "the municipality with the best urban carbon reduction project" for its "Zero Waste Üsküdar, Zero Waste Market" project. The award was given by the Urban Transformation and Urbanism Foundation (KENTSEV) in November 2025. In the project, fruit and vegetable waste from the district's street markets becomes compost in OCTOEN composting machines.
From market waste to community gardens
Organic waste is separated at the market stalls and taken to the composting machines, where it becomes compost within a day. After testing in accredited laboratories, the compost is used in the district's parks, community gardens and green areas. At the Üsküdar Environment Festival in June 2026, the municipality said the project had turned about 100 t of organic waste into compost.
Why it matters
Organic waste that rots in a landfill releases methane. Processing it close to where it is produced cuts both hauling and those emissions, and the KentFest award recognizes Üsküdar's approach as a citywide carbon reduction project.
